How does the optimization of Energy Management work?
Overview
The Viessmann Energy Management optimizes the functions of electrical and thermal-electrical devices that produce, store and consume electricity and combine them into an overall system. In such an overall system with, for example, a Vitocal heat pump and a Vitocharge VX3 power storage system, it can develop its potential particularly well thanks to the coordinated optimization features. The energy-efficient, optimized operation increases self consumption of self-produced electrical energy and thus reduces the electricity costs.
The Energy Management optimization can be activated separately for each device. The Energy Management generally works according to the principle of self-consumption optimization. However, if tariffs have been added in the ViCare app, tariff-based optimization can also be activated to further reduce the electricity costs of the system. The available optimization features depend on the devices in the system and the optimization settings that have been made.
Self-consumption optimization
In order to produce your own energy and thus enable self consumption, at least one photovoltaic system must be part of the system. If an additional battery (power storage system) is part of the system, the Energy Management can store the energy in the power storage based on forecasts. This means that the stored energy is still available even when the sun is not shining, and self consumption can be increased even further, reducing costs.
Tariff-based optimization
In order for tariff-based optimization to work and costs to be saved, a dynamic or time-based electricity tariff must be in place and a “Dynamic Assistant” subscription must be active in the ViCare app. If an electricity tariff has been added in the “Tariffs” section of the ViCare app and the tariff is active, no further settings need to be made for optimization.
In the Energy Management settings in the ViCare app, it can also configure whether the battery (power storage system) should be charged from the power grid when prices are low or not.
Tariff-based optimization is available for One Base heat pumps and the Vitocharge VX3 power storage system, as well as for Vitocal air/water heat pumps from 2022 in combination with Vitocharge VX3. For the Viessmann Charging Station (charging stations for electric vehicles), a new charging mode will be available in the ViCare app from mid-2026, which will take tariff data into account. Tariff-based optimization is currently available for systems located in Germany. An expansion of the feature to other countries is planned.
