How does the optimization of Energy Management work?

Overview

The Viessmann Energy Management optimizes the functions of electrical and thermal-electrical devices that produce, store and consume electricity and combine them into an overall system. In such an overall system with, for example, a Vitocal heat pump and a Vitocharge VX3 power storage system, it can develop its potential particularly well thanks to the coordinated optimization features. The energy-efficient, optimized operation increases self consumption of self-produced electrical energy and thus reduces the electricity costs.

The Energy Management optimization can be activated separately for each device. The Energy Management generally works according to the principle of self-consumption optimization. However, if tariffs have been added in the ViCare app, tariff-based optimization can also be activated to further reduce the electricity costs of the system. The available optimization features depend on the devices in the system and the optimization settings that have been made.

In order for Energy Management to combine all devices into a smart, integrated system and optimize energy flows in the home, the system requires at least one Viessmann energy meter to activate the Energy Management, as well as commissioning via the ViGuide app by a specialist partner. This is also a prerequisite for visualizing the data and to use the full range of functions, including analysis of household consumption.

Basic version of Energy Management

For systems consisting solely of a One Base heat pump (Vitocal from 2022 onwards), the basic version of Viessmann Energy Management is available in some countries, including Germany and automatically activated. It allows you to add an electricity tariff and to use it as the basis for tariff-based optimization for the heat pump, even without an energy meter integrated into the system. Household consumption is not taken into account. If the basic version has been automatically activated for a system, a notification is available in the notification center and the “Energy Management” and “Tariffs” sections are available in the settings in the ViCare app.

Self-consumption optimization
In order to produce your own energy and thus enable self consumption, at least one photovoltaic system must be part of the system. If an additional battery (power storage system) is part of the system, the Energy Management can store the energy in the power storage based on forecasts. This means that the stored energy is still available even when the sun is not shining, and self consumption can be increased even further, reducing costs.

Tariff-based optimization
In order for tariff-based optimization to work and costs to be saved, a dynamic or time-based electricity tariff must be in place and a Dynamic Assistant subscription must be active in the ViCare app. If an electricity tariff has been added in the “Tariffs” section of the ViCare app and the tariff is active, no further settings need to be made for optimization.

In the Energy Management settings in the ViCare app, it can also configure whether the battery (power storage system) should be charged from the power grid when prices are low or not.

Tariff-based optimization is available for One Base heat pumps (Vitocal from 2022 onwards) and the Vitocharge VX3 power storage system, as well as for Vitocal air/water heat pumps from 2017 in combination with Vitocharge VX3 and Vitoconnect. For the Viessmann Charging Station (charging stations for electric vehicles), tariff-based optimization is available via the smart charging mode. Currently, tariff-based optimization is available for systems located in Germany. An expansion of the feature to other countries is planned.
